It’s typically frowned upon to kiss and tell, but when Michael Kett does it, he gets the opposite reaction.
The 57-year-old Naperville resident encourages people to pucker up and then tells it like he sees it as a certified lipsologist.
“I really enjoy the lip print readings because it is all about the participant, and not about me as a performer,” an entertainer for more than 20 years. “It’s a personality reading, like a palm reading, but it’s not a reading of the future.”
Lipsology, the art and science of lip print reading, was founded by Jilly Eddy, a Seattle-based entertainer and lip print aficionado. After training with Eddy and taking a 12-week course, Kett earned certification in May 2011.
“I am very proud of him; he is an excellent lipsologist,” Eddy said. “He skillfully reads lip prints, bringing wonderful affirmations and ‘right on’ insights to all he reads for.”
During a lip print reading, Kett examines the size, shape, color and unique markings of a person’s lips. His tools of the trade include lipstick, tissue and “kiss cards” that guests get to keep as a memento of the reading.
He said even men don’t shy away from donning a little lipstick.
“Usually it’s at a cocktail party, so after a few beers, the guys are really into it,” Kett said. “But, the funny part is when they try to put lipstick on, and they don’t know how and they look like a clown. Their wives or girlfriends usually help them put it on.”
Kett’s wife of 32 years, Nancy, doesn’t help with applying lip color, but she does support her husband’s latest venture. She’s been in the audience during Michael’s shows many times, and loves to see the crowd’s reaction.
“It’s a riot,” she said. “People are surprised and amazed; they like to learn things about themselves and it brings a lot of smiles and laughter.”
Alicia Seghi of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, who hired Kett to entertain at a 2012 fund-raiser, shared the sentiment.
“We wanted to have something fun for the guests, and we heard about Michael,” said Seghi, of Lombard. “Everyone loved it. They were a little confused at first, but he is such an entertainer. It is a very unique talent.”
Unique it is. In the U.S., there are only six certified lipsologists. Since 2011, Kett has read more than 2,000 lip prints, making sense of smackers at private parties, corporate events and more.
“No two lip prints are alike,” Kett said. “There are 25 main categories and over 100 subcategories of lip prints. I just tell people what I see. If they don’t believe it, that’s fine. It’s up to them to apply it to themselves.”
