There is something about the smell of a burning autumn fire and the crunching sound of multicolored leaves beneath my feet that will always get to me. As the days get shorter and the air gets colder, fall rolls in and brings by far one of my favorite days: Halloween. The way some people embrace the patriotism of the 4th of July or the holiday spirit of Christmas, my heart warms for black cats and scary costumes.

My mom always bent over backwards making my costumes. I was everything from an orange M&M to a strange looking Prince Dracula to an urban warrior with a tiny fake neon green Uzi (I still don’t know how I convinced Mom to let me pull off that one).

The excitement hasn’t died as I’ve grown up. I enjoy every part: From the anxiety of determining the perfect costume to the anticipation of waiting for the sun to go down for the real fun. Halloween is the one time of the year when you have the freedom to be whoever you want, and the one day when everyone expects you to be someone else. From scary zombies to superheroes, this day is the door to another universe giving you endless possibilities to be someone new.

And there’s also something ironic about the fact that for one night a year, the suburbs become the most exciting place on earth...
