Obama's half-brother to VF: 'No one knows I exist' The photograph shows a young, unsmiling man standing in front of a jagged fence built from scraps of timber and rusted bits of corrugated metal. The 26-year-old man is outside his shanty home on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. He survives on less than $1 a month. He says he is Barack Obama's half-brother.

Metro & Tri-state Lawsuit: Funding system violates civil rights
The State of Illinois' school funding system violates the civil rights of its black and Latino children and should be declared unconstitutional, a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the Chicago Urban League contends. "We have an educational system that discriminates against minority children, and those who should be held responsible for overseeing this are doing nothing about it," Urban League chief Cheryle Jackson said.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT Kids urged to attend, skip first day of school Comment from momzilla: I'm really angry about the situation. I'm angry that there aren't enough books to go around. I'm angry that Meeks is using this as an opportunity to gain attention for himself. I'm angry that so many children don't have fathers involved as a positive influence in their lives. I'm angry that illegal immigrants cost us taxpayer money since we're funding the schools and they are not. I'm angry in general at the decay of our society. And I weep for the future of our society. I pray for the children going back to school. I hold my breath for the first school shooting - we know it's coming. I don't have the answer though. We've let this mess get so out of control. Have something to say? Comment.

Campaign 2008

Sports Lilly's gem is flawed Games like this are why managers like Lou Piniella tolerate postgame media sessions for barely a minute, why veteran players don't talk much about division leads in August and why nobody from Chicago older than a Chinese gymnast should take the Cubs' coronation for granted.

Sox beat Mariners for 5th in a row Ken Griffey Jr. had just crossed home plate for home run No. 609 when he turned for the White Sox’ dugout — a first in his career after completing his classic trot — and faced a surprise party of sorts. Such a milestone blast — one that tied him with Sammy Sosa for fifth on the all-time list — deserved a nice reception from his new teammates, complete with plenty of high fives, hugs and back slaps.

'Lightning' Bolt's gold medal act a breath of fresh air Jay Mariotti: He's a showboat, a hot dog and a clown, the sprinting version of Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens, all those things that cause Bob Costas and the purists to cringe. And thank God for that, by the way. Because if it wasn't for the show-business flair of Usain Bolt, we merely would know him as that fast guy who became the first man ever to break world records in the 100 and 200 meters at the same Olympics.

Business You, too, can sell Chicago Lewis Lazare: After the release last week of the considerably less-than-stellar "Chicago Surprises" video -- shown to International Olympic Committee members in Beijing -- came word Wednesday the Chicago 2016 Committee is reaching out to all the city's citizens and asking them to create their own video take (60 seconds or less) on why Chicago is the best place to host the 2016 Olympics. A special channel has been established at Chicago2016.org that will allow video makers to post their finished efforts online.

D-minus for 3-D

As it happens, I missed the press preview for "Fly Me to the Moon." It was a stupid misunderstanding, too boring to describe. My fault. I admit I was not inconsolable. After "Space Chimps," I had launched enough animated creatures to the Moon without starting on the insect kingdom. But even more to the point, "Fly Me to the Moon" was in 3-D, and I could all too easily imagine being "startled" by flies buzzing, ohmigod! straight at me!
