NEWS ALERTS:

Cook County leads the nation as the county with the highest number of whites -- meaning those not Hispanic, black, Asian, American Indian or Native Hawaiian -- moving out. (Sun-Times News Group file)
Cook County loses largest number of whites in nation Alis Priebe loved her life in Chicago, but ultimately Wheaton had more of what she wanted -- great schools, green lawns and more housing bang for the buck. In February 2003, she and her husband, Mark, moved to the DuPage County suburb, making them two of the 215,535 estimated white people to leave Cook County between 2000 and 2007.

Metro & Tri-state Does Burke's war chest violate ethics?
Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th) -- who is sitting on an $8 million war chest -- has accepted campaign contributions of $5,000 and $4,500 respectively from two controversial airport concessionaires in apparent violation of the city's ethics ordinance. The ordinance prohibits elected officials from accepting more than $1,500 a year from city contractors or companies seeking city business.

Campaign 2008

Sports On dreamy night, U.S. flag-bearer steals show Jay Mariotti: For one night, if only one night, we could dream. In a magnificent stadium with a peek-a-boo roof, there sat the President of the United States and 90 international dignitaries, enjoying a fireworks-bathed party of dazzling performance art inside the locked ideological gates of a Communist land.

Cubs look to knock out Cardinals Alfonso Soriano can't tell the future, but he can do the math. ''We hope we can do what we did with Milwaukee,'' the Cubs' hottest hitter said. ''They are six games back now, and we sweep, they go back nine. And nine games with maybe 40 games left -- that's not too many games left.''

Putting the 'ugh' in dugout Two days off seemingly did wonders for White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. Who cares if it was actually a two-game suspension by Major League Baseball for Guillen's behavior during and after Sunday's game with the Kansas City Royals? Two days off was still two days off.

Lifestyles Chicagoan targets silly media messages Paige Wiser: Sarah Haskins didn't set out to represent all womanhood. But she's causing an Internet sensation with her 3½-minute "Target Women" comedy segments at current.com. Like the "Yogurt Edition." Haskins announces, "Yogurt is the official food of women," and then sharply mocks the kinds of ads that gush, "This is shoe-shopping good." She dances, savages Jamie Lee Curtis and then puts a spoonful of yogurt up to a poster of Hillary Clinton and says, "Eat it."

She is a super saver and shared her tips for back-to-school saving: "First, I keep my sons' supply list with me in my purse the entire summer. You never know when you are going to run across a good sale."
