Movies online: Free 'n' easy, but is it theft and piracy? This weekend, you could pay $10 to see the cinematic vampire love story "New Moon," stand in line for overpriced snacks with your new tween buddies and then jostle for a seat in a crowded theater.Or you could pop some microwave popcorn, open your laptop and log on to a Web site with the supremely blatant name watchnewmoononline.org, which was active 12 hours after the movie premiered in Chicago theaters.

Susan Boyle's debut doesn't deserve hype it's getting Jim DeRogatis: When it comes to tragic spectacles in this sorry age of reality television, beyond even the pathetic sight of Patti Blagojevich eating bugs on "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!," falls the obnoxious exploitation of Scottish homebody Susan Boyle.

Las Vegas and Orlando held up somewhat better but likewise have seen attendance fall off since the middle of the decade. But there's a silver lining for Chicago in its loss of two large conventions this month: It shows that the competing cities have space to fill.
