LAKE COUNTY | Home-schooled girl, 15, had health problems
A 15-year-old Lake County girl died Tuesday of complications from the H1N1 virus, county health officials said Wednesday. The unidentified girl, who was home-schooled, had pre-existing health problems that made her more vulnerable to serious complications from the flu, the Lake County Health Department said.
KELLOGG CEREAL:Kellogg Co. says it will pull immunity claims from its Rice Krispies and Cocoa Krispies cereal boxes.
Kellogg said the move is a response to concerns in the media about the timing of the immunity claim and the swine flu outbreak. Kellogg began adding extra antioxidants to its cereal last year and began advertising the change with labels that read: "Now help support your child's immunity."
FIRST FELINE H1N1 CASE:A 13-year-old cat in Iowa has been infected with swine flu.
It's believed to be the first case of the H1N1 virus in a feline in the United States.
The domestic shorthaired cat was treated last week at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames and has recovered, officials said Wednesday.
The veterinarian who treated the cat, Dr. Brett Sponseller, said two of the three people in the cat's Iowa home had flu-like symptoms before the cat became ill. The cat was lethargic, had a loss of appetite and appeared to have trouble breathing. Getting children vaccinated for swine flu also can help prevent the illness from spreading to pets. There is no swine flu vaccine for pets.
