'LIFT' | Mission reaches out to those from shelters, with cancer

November 3, 2009

Debra Mack looked forward to a day of pampering when she walked into the Southwest Side salon Monday.

The Pacific Garden Mission resident had her hair cut and relaxed -- a rare luxury for her and the other 99 women treated to makeovers at Exotic Trenz Salon, 2605 W. 79th.

"It was a blessing," Mack said, admiring her new look.

About 30 Hair and makeup stylists volunteered their services for the daylong event for women battling cancer or residing at area shelters.

Hair Zone, a New Jersey-based firm, provided Sensationnel wigs and packages of hair, and Mount Prospect-based Perfect Results offered relaxers and other hair care products.

"We are reaching out to battered women who need uplifting, a confidence boost or an esteem lift," said Sharon Payton, who conceived the giveaway, partially in tribute to her mother, Jacqueline Payton, a hair stylist and community organizer who died of breast cancer.

Throughout the day, scores of women walked out of the salon sporting fresh long weaves, micro braids and relaxed and dyed hair -- styles priced at up to $85 each. Goodie bags and lunch made the event a party.

"I look like a diva," said Linda Johnson, modeling her new micro pin-up do outside the salon. "I came in here looking like wretch."

For many, it was a chance to dabble in makeup. Several women approached makeup artist Nicole Rogers expressing a desire for more natural looks, but in the end, opted to go glam.

"Everyone should have the opportunity at least once to have their makeup done professionally,' Rogers said.

Justine Sanders, 38, had zero experience with makeup before Monday's treat.

"This is my first time wearing makeup," she said, beaming. "I don't know how to put it on."
