Oak Lawn woman makes a mean soppressatta

October 29, 2009

So who has the best homemade soppressatta in town?

The trophy goes to Sharon Gilberto, of Oak Lawn.

More than 250 people attended Frank Balestri's 3rd annual soppressatta contest Oct. 18 at Studio 31 on Chicago's South Side.

They feasted on 50 pounds of Italian sausage, 60 pounds of Italian beef and 10 pounds each of mostaccioli and linguine in clam sauce.

Eight people judged entries from 35 contestants.

"The judges were pretty full," said Balestri, a Chicago police officer who learned how to make the spicy sausage as a child.

Three trophies were handed out, with second place honors going to Billy King and third place to Michael Levato.
