The term gluten-free sounds like something you don't want to try unless it's absolutely mandatory, which it is for those with celiac disease or a wheat allergy.
Deerfields Bakery is helping those with the dietary restriction by offering a selection of scrumptious products that can be enjoyed whether you are gluten intolerant or not.
The wheat-free products are all baked in the Buffalo Grove facility in a new oven and are transported in closed cabinets to their other locations to eliminate cross-contamination.
Preparation and shipping aside, the products are really good.
Two of my favorite are the blueberry cream cheese coffee cake -- which unites organic blueberries with a lemon-infused cream cheese filling dotted with almond slivers -- and the lemon drop cookies -- soft-baked lemon-flavored cookies with a drizzle of white icing.
Deerfields uses all natural products in its baked goods and replaces gluten with xanthum gum.
It uses sucanat, a non-refined cane sugar; 100 percent maple syrup; honey; molasses, and brown sugar as sweeteners.
The products are wholesome and good.
Deerfields Bakery has three locations: 25 S. Roselle, Schaumburg; 201 N. Buffalo Grove, Buffalo Grove, and 813 N. Waukegan, Deerfield. Deerfields cookies are available in the Lincoln Park, South Loop and Wheaton Whole Foods stores.
