'CSI' star's pals had clue

Dourdan's drug arrest was expected by colleagues, who may step up intervention efforts to get him help

May 1, 2008

The arrest of Gary Dourdan on drug charges in Palm Springs, Calif., came as no surprise to a number of the actor's ''CSI'' colleagues at the hit CBS forensic drama.

''We have been worried about Gary for some time,'' a key member of the show's production team told me. ''It's just a shame that he wasn't able to get the help he needs before this happened.''

The actor was arrested early Monday in the California desert resort, after a police officer spied him sleeping in his car -- and discovered what appeared to be cocaine, heroin, Ecstasy, prescription drugs and paraphernalia in Dourdan's car.

The timing of this arrest couldn't have come at a worse time for the actor, who has played Warrick Brown on ''CSI'' since the show launched in 2000. Though not officially confirmed by either CBS or show spokespeople, Dourdan's departure from the series was reported by Entertainment Weekly in mid-April and confirmed to me Wednesday by two totally reliable ''CSI'' sources.

Apparently, the original plan was for Dourdan to be gone -- period. But after somewhat lengthy negotiations, it was decided his Warrick character would return occasionally next season -- expected by many to be the final one for the long-running series.

•   Dourdan's friends on the show also have been so worried about his alleged drug use, there was talk of an intervention -- though that did not take place.

''After this, I think there will be a concerted effort to convince Gary to get help -- before he kills himself,'' said a ''CSI'' staffer, genuinely concerned about Dourdan as a friend.

•   Dourdan last snared negative headlines in July of last year, when he went after a paparazzo working for the TMZ celebrity Web site outside a Los Angeles nightclub. A police report was filed, but Dourdan disputed the allegations and nothing came of that altercation.

PITT'S PLAN: Among the many projects Brad Pitt's Plan B production company has added to its slate is a film version of David Sheff's emotional best-selling memoir Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction -- as well as the companion book written by his son Nic Sheff, Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines. The father-son team have made the talk show rounds recently -- including ''Oprah'' -- and Pitt may both star as David Sheff as well as produce a movie inspired by the two books.

SEEN ON SCENE: Jane Lynch, a veteran of such Christopher Guest improv-centric films as ''Best in Show,'' ''A Mighty Wind'' and ''For Your Consideration,'' checked out the new Second City revue ''No Country for Old White Men'' at the improv mecca. ... Before finishing up some reshoots of ''Chicago Overcoat,'' veteran character actor and ''The Sopranos'' mainstay Frank Vincent dined at Morton's on State, while Nick Stahl made the scene at Gibsons on Rush.

LAUGHTER GUARANTEED: When Ellen DeGeneres hosts a taping of her daily talk show Saturday outdoors at Pioneer Court near NBC Tower (airing at 3 p.m. Tuesday on WMAQ-Channel 5), her guests will include Oscar winner and Chicago native Robin Williams -- chatting about his upcoming Vegas show. ... To get herself in a Windy City mood, Ellen is having Chicago's own Bucket Boys on her show Friday.

SLY DROPS OUT: Unlike Sly & the Family Stone's infamous last-minute concert no-show in 1970 -- that caused fans to riot at Grant Park -- at least the cancellation this time came a few days before the legendary group's Saturday gig at the Vic Theatre. The show's promoter blames ''health reasons.'' Get your refund at point of purchase.

GOOD ADVICE: Tickets have gone on sale for David Rambo's ''The Lady With All the Answers,'' starring two-time Tony Award winner Judith Ivey in the one-woman show, playing legendary Chicago advice columnist Ann Landers -- a Sun-Times fixture for decades. The production runs May 27-June 29 at Northlight Theatre in Skokie.
