A few Fox honchos’ ears were burning Sunday night in Dallas — and it had nothing to do with the action on the Cowboys Stadium field. Turns out Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez wanted to slug a few folks after he spotted himself and his girlfriend Cameron Diaz being shown to the 111 million people watching the game.
America saw the actress lovingly feeding popcorn into A-Rod’s mouth.
“He really went ballistic — thinking the cameraman was out to get them in a paparazzi-like shot. … That’s so crazy,” said my source. “Anyone who knows anything about producing a live sports event — especially something as huge as the Super Bowl — would know that those celebrity shots are purely random.
“A-Rod, of all people, should know that.”
After that one shot — which frankly was totally innocent and kind of sweet — Rodriguez got a guarantee that he and Diaz would not be televised any further.
“That’s one reason you saw so many shots of [former] President and Mrs. Bush. They didn’t seem to mind being shown on camera,” added the Fox insider.
KING CAPER? For those CNN viewers who already miss Larry King, there’s word that one of the veteran talk show star’s first special reports for CNN may focus on the much-discussed, accident-plagued Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” directed by Julie Taymor, with music by U2’s Bono and The Edge.
REALITY BUZZ: Word has it, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino wants to extend his “brand” and his 15 minutes of fame by tackling a serious acting career.
That runs counter to the advice the “Jersey Shore” and “Dancing With the Stars” personality has been getting from advisers — who understandably believe the guy with the killer abs should market himself in ways that make more sense. That includes gym franchise deals, fitness and diet videos and books — plus those well-paying party gigs at hot clubs in L.A., New York and Vegas.
† However, “Dancing With the Stars” pro Derek Hough does have Hollywood types thinking differently about his future — expecting the talented ballroom hoofer’s sparkling personality will work well as he pursues a bunch of film and TV roles coming his way.
SUPER BOWL BITS: While Charlie Sheen watched the game in the red-plush decorated screening theater in his L.A. mansion he calls the “porn room,” he did it sans those formerly ever-present “escorts” and porn stars — sipping non-spiked Gatorade. He reportedly was in beddy-bye by 11 p.m., soberly headed to slumberland.
† While tens of millions were chuckling over the funny Best Buy commercial Justin Bieber did with Ozzy Osbourne, the teen megastar thought that early evening of national football fanaticism would be a good time to take his girlfriend Selena Gomez out for a public date — without being swamped by hysterical fans. While TMZ did capture the young lovers on Santa Monica Pier and on the beach, Bieber was right, as the few folks out on Super Bowl night noticed the happy duo.
IN THE OVEN: Victoria Beckham is said to be thrilled to pieces that the baby in her belly is a girl — expected to arrive early this summer. Papa David Beckham is equally happy that the couple’s three sons will finally get a baby sister.
IN TOWN: Phil Keoghan, best known as the host of “The Amazing Race,” hits town for a screening Thursday of his documentary “The Ride” at Regal City North Stadium 14, 2600 N. Western.
The film chronicles Keoghan’s 3,500-mile, 42-day, cross-country Los Angeles to New York bike ride in 2009 that raised more than $500,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
NO CHARGE ... YET: While Lindsay Lohan is expected to face felony grand theft charges later this week — related to that $2,500 necklace — at least the actress hasn’t yet been zapped. No charges were filed Monday against Lohan by the L.A. district attorney’s office.
SEEN ON THE SCENE: “Shameless” star William H. Macy was spied dodging snowflakes as he slipped into Gibsons Rush Street steakery. … Former U.N. ambassador John Bolton — who is considering a run for the presidency in 2012 — was seen posing with the Harry statue Saturday at Harry Caray’s on Kinzie. … Speaking of HC, congrats to the eatery chain’s Grant DePorter — inducted Monday night for a two-year term as chairman of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association at the Westin River North.
