South Side native Jenny McCarthy is said to be more than just “giddy” about her new romance with Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. A longtime pal of the actress and TV personality (going back to her days at Mother McAuley High School) tells me that McCarthy “has really fallen for the guy. He’s such a man’s man, the most macho guy Jenny’s dated or been involved with for a long, long time.”

According to the source, McCarthy loves how Urlacher is the strong, silent type — the way he “quietly takes care of her when they’re together.

“That may sound old-fashioned, especially since Jenny is very much her own person and a very contemporary, independent woman in many ways. But she loves the attention and the way he treats her. It’s very comforting.”

Both Urlacher and McCarthy are very aware of how tough it is to be in a relationship constantly targeted by the media. On top of that, it’s certain that the Bears’ veteran has been given tips on ways to find privacy from his teammate Jay Cutler, who has undergone similar glare, thanks to his relationship with Kristin Cavallari, who’s expecting his child.

Over the weekend McCarthy and Urlacher clearly didn’t mind “going public” in Our Town — with widely seen appearances at RPM Italian, Studio Paris and Board Room.

On a charity note, RPM Italian, Paris Club and Hub 51 are boosting McCarthy’s longtime efforts dedicated to children with autism by donating $1 from every specialty cocktail to raise funds during Autism Awareness Month.

MORE ROMANCE : While in New York this weekend, a real estate source filled me in on Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, currently looking for a country home. “From the way they’re talking, I’d say there’s a big engagement announcement in the works,” the source said.

Someone close to Kanye West says one reason the superstar is tardy in finishing his short film, being shown outside out of competition at next month’s Cannes Film Festival, is that the Chicago native is a bit distracted by his fling with Kim Kardashian. A Kanye pal pooh-poohs that, claiming the delay is all about difficulties in the filming schedule — unrelated to West’s love life.

There’s bound to be a lot of gossip coming about members of the hot new Brit musical import One Direction — especially hunkster Harry Styles, who reportedly is an item with model Emma Ostilly , whom he met when she shot the group’s “Gotta Be You” video.

PIPPA PROBLEMS: Word comes from across the pond that Pippa Middleton is being seriously “reined-in” by her sister and future British queen, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

On top of that, the siblings’ mom, Carole Middleton — clearly aware of the her younger daughter’s recent embarrassing romp in Paris — has called her home to the family’s country estate for a tongue-lashing.

Pippa has been told to clean up her act and “think first” before accepting

any invitations that might cause an issue for the royals.

SEEN ON THE SCENE: Things were hopping Saturday at the Pump Room at the Public as Kelsey Grammer and “Boss” castmates, including Troy Garrity, checked out the eatery’s new spring menu. Also spied at the Public’s Library Room, after their Aragon show, were hot bandmates from Snow Patrol, seen happily sipping ginger margaritas. … While in town, Kim Kardashian made a beeline for Gibsons with Larsa Pippen from “The Real Housewives of Miami,” Larsa’s hubby and Bulls great Scottie Pippen, Matthew Pritzker and former Mrs. Illinois, Ashley Bond.
