D emi Moore’s closest friends, her daughters, ex-husband Bruce Willis and even estranged husband Ashton Kutcher have known something was seriously wrong with the actress for weeks. People in Moore’s inner circle were especially worried by her vagueness, lapses of memory and inability to focus even in simple, social conversations.
“Everything she’s been doing the past couple of months have exasperated some long-simmering problems in Demi’s life,” a close friend said Wednesday. “Obviously, there’s the stress of her marriage collapsing. But she’s always been crazy-obsessed about her weight and, I’m sorry to say, become too dependent on all kinds of medications.”Another source told me Moore’s youth obsession — often mentioned to explain her marriage to Kutcher — has further implications.
“You’ve heard about someone having a ‘daddy’ complex. Well, Demi has a ‘daughter’ complex. She’s a great mom but relates so closely to her daughters, she’s more like a pal than a parent. She is so into all their interests and habits,” added the second source.
Perhaps it was that “youth obsession” that explains the TMZ report about Moore’s inhaling nitrous oxide, nicknamed a “whip-it.” Young club kids use the inhalant to get a quick high, and it may have contributed to Moore’s collapse and hospitalization Monday night.
Now Moore has dropped out of playing
Gloria Steinem in “Lovelace,” the movie about “Deep Throat” adult film actress Linda Lovelace, and other projects are on hold as she seeks treatment for her alleged eating disorder and dependence on pharmaceuticals.
‘IDOL’ WORDS: Even though Jane Carrey, the 24-year-old waitress daughter of actor Jim Carrey, exhibited a very nice singing voice in the San Diego auditions for “American Idol,” the backstage buzz is a bit snarky.
Some staffers claim Carrey got special consideration and was tapped for the upcoming “Hollywood Week” because the judges think that Carrey’s famous father will help boost interest in the already top-rated TV show.
† In other “Idol” news, I’ve heard judge Steven Tyler is so tired of all the flak he got for butchering the National Anthem at the AFC Championship game Sunday, he skewered some “Idol” staffers — screaming expletives at them when they dared to kid him about it.
DOWN UNDER UP HERE: You can bet there will be lots of “G’Days” uttered Saturday as Our Town’s contingent of proud Aussies — and fans of Australia — gather at the Mid-America Club for “G’Day USA: Australia Day Ball,” a slightly belated toast to the country’s national day, which actually is Thursday. The special guest will be the witty and opinionated
Tabatha Coffey, whose “Tabatha Takes Over” business turn-around show airs on Bravo. She will be joined by Australia’s ambassador to the U.S., Kim Beazley, and Roger Price, the Aussie consul general in Chicago.
‘I DO’: It’s not really legal, but Ricky Martin and his longtime boyfriend, Puerto Rican financier Carlos Gonzalez, are calling their ceremony in Bora Bora earlier this month a “marriage.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Many Gene & Georgetti fans will be at Park West on Sunday for a screening of a special film about the amazing 70-year history of the city’s longest-running steakhouse. The documentary features eatery regulars like Dominic DiFrisco and Lee Flaherty, plus Chicago restaurant kingpins like Rich Melman paying tribute to Gene & Georgetti’s Michelle, Marion and Tony Durpetti, their family and staff for seven decades as a Chicago dining landmark.
† This summer, Chicago wine pro and Channel 11’s “Check, Please” host Alpana Singh will open the Boarding House, her new restaurant and wine bar at 720 N. Wells, once site of a real boarding house.
SEEN ON THE SCENE: Late-night talker and author Chelsea Handler was spied getting her sushi fix with a few friends at Japonais. … Blackhawks young guns Nick Leddy, Andrew Shaw, Marcus Kruger, Jimmy Hayes and Ben Smith chowed down at Rosebud Steakhouse the other night. … Cubs GM Jed Hoyer checked out “Sky’s the Limit (Weather Permitting)” at Second City e.t.c. theater.
