When Melissa McCarthy was making “Bridesmaids” with Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, winning awards was “the furthest thing from our minds,” she told the Sun-Times late last year.
The Plainfield native, nominated Tuesday for a best supporting actress Oscar, was surprised when awards buzz begin building around the hit comedy.
“You know, it was all about being funny — doing something that was bawdy and would make people laugh and have fun, especially women who could relate to the whole wedding planning scene,” she said.
“I don’t think the word ‘Oscar’ was ever once used on that set — unless it was to some guy on the crew who was named ‘Oscar.’ ”
As for the question often thrown at female Academy Award nominees — “Who are you wearing?” — it sounds like McCarthy will have some solid hometown help.
The actress told Eonline.com Tuesday she’ll turn to her high school pal, noted shoe designer Brian Atwood, for advice on what she’ll wear to the Feb. 26 awards.
“We used to sit in his room and cut out Vogue patterns … I’m going to call him and say, ‘What do I do?’ ”
