Chicago Shakespeare Theater has always considered musical theater master Stephen Sondheim to be the Shakespeare of the modern American stage. Director Gary Griffin will be directing both an early Sondheim masterpiece, “Gypsy” (for which he wrote only the lyrics) and his most recent work, “Road Show,” in quick succession. Here he discusses both works with the music directors of each show — Rick Fox (“Gypsy”) and Michael Mahler (“Road Show”). — Hedy Weiss
