Seanachai, Eclipse Theaters announce new seasons

Two popular theater companies — Seanachai (which focuses on all things Irish) and Eclipse (which devotes each season to the work of a single playwright) — have announced their upcoming seasons.

Bearing the umbrella theme of “Rag-Tags and Wayward Souls,” Seanachai’s 2012-2013 lineup will include: The world premiere of Honor Molloy’s “In Pigeon House” (Oct. 17-Nov. 18), a show, directed by Plasticene veteran Brian Shaw, that is set against the drug-fueled contemporary Dublin club scene but will feature elements of vaudeville, music hall and cinema as part of its love letter to the traveling shows of the early 20th century; Billy Roche’s “Lay Me Down Softly” (March 27-April 28, 2013), a play, set in the early 1960s, about Delaney’s Travelling Roadshow, which lights up entertainment-starved rural Ireland with a helter-skelter world of bumper cars, bearded ladies, rifle ranges and its own internal battles. For tickets, call (866) 811-4111 or visit www.seanachai.org.

Meanwhile, Eclipse Theatre will celebrate the work of that prolific British playwright, Alan Ayckbourn, with three plays: “Woman in Mind” (April 11-May 19, 2013), a black comedy, directed by Steve Scott, about a housewife married to a boring cleric who, when she gets knocked unconscious, starts hallucinating about being part of a posh family living in a stately home; “Bedroom Farce” (July 25-Sept. 1, 2013), a comedy, directed by Nick Sandys, that is set on one endless Saturday night, and revolves around a middle-class couple whose marriage is on the rocks, and the three other couples they make miserable; “Haunting Julia” (Oct. 31-Dec. 8, 2013), a drama, directed by Kevin Hagan, about a musical prodigy who committed suicide 12 years earlier, and the three men — her father, her boyfriend and a psychic — who try to explain what happened to her.

Eclipse, which also plans a slew of readings and special events revolving around the Ayckbourn season, performs at the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport. For additional information visit www.eclipsetheatre.com.
