Before he bawdily belted Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in the 2003 Will Ferrell comedy “Old School,” Dan Finnerty and his three-dude ensemble The Dan Band had what he considered to be “a pretty decent following” in L.A. But his devotees were mostly females. Once “Old School” hit theaters and featuring him skillfully butchering the No. 1 1980s ballad, guys “who normally would have wanted to kick my ass in high school” became his No. 1 fans.

“That’s a personal high-five,” says Finnerty, who’ll kick out some of his largely lady-rock jams Saturday at The House of Blues.

His rendition of 50 Cent’s raunchy “Candy Shop” in “The Hangover” boosted his profile even more. “Are you gonna back that thing up or should I push up on it?” he sings sultrily while sidling up to a stunned grandmotherly type at a wedding reception.

Besides Tyler, Finnerty has, um, reinterpreted Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and even Shakira — occasionally employing gymnastic ribbons, bells and Hula Hoops. And though he admits to being “shocked” by his continued success — “I was like, ‘Wow, this is all from drunk karaoke’” — his self-deprecation belies considerable efforts the former “Stomp” cast member and his two singing/dancing sidekicks make in the name of comedy.

“For it to be funny, it has to be clean and completely committed,” he says, using clean to mean dead-on moves and not a dearth of cussing. “Otherwise it would wear thin after one song. So I’m a hard-ass with those poor back-up guys to have the moves down. I’m like [choreographer] Debbie Allen.”

But otherwise he’s not very demanding, Finnerty insists, “unless ‘demanding’ means ‘no more than four beers before a show.’”

The Dan Band performs Saturday, June 16 at 9 p.m., House of Blues, 329 N. Dearborn, (312) 923–2000, houseofblues.com. Tickets, $22.50 in advance, $25 day of show; 17+over.
