Cook's 2 songs straddle line in discord and rhyme

'AMERICAN IDOL' | Archuleta the best, Castro 'utterly atrocious'

May 7, 2008

David Cook should have been in his element Tuesday on "American Idol," when the remaining four contestants picked two selections from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of most influential songs.

But he wasn't. His performance of Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" was lethargic ("It was an OK choice and a solid performance," Randy Jackson said), but the judges thought he redeemed himself with his second song, "Baba O'Reilly" by the Who.

Still, in Round Three between Cook and David Archuleta (the presumed front-runners), we're calling it for Archuleta. He scored points with "Stand By Me" ("I loved it, dude. That was hot," Jackson said) and "Love Me Tender." ("You didn't beat the competition tonight, you crushed the competition," Cowell said).

Syesha Mercado did Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" proud and broke down in tears as the judges discussed her performance of "A Change Is Gonna Come." She said she felt a personal connection to Sam Cooke's civil rights anthem.

Worst of the night was Jason Castro, who butchered Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" ("That was utterly atrocious," Cowell said. "What were you thinking?") and forgot some of the words to Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" ("I'd pack your suitcase," Cowell said).

The gang gets the results at 8 tonight on WFLD-Channel 32.
