Oswego jeweler hatches plan for women of ‘Duck Dynasty’

It’s a long way to the swamps of Monroe, La., from Oswego, but jeweler Nikki Barrow has heard the call of “Duck Dynasty.”

Barrow is creating custom jewelry for the wives and family members of A&E network’s hit TV show, centered on the Robertson family and its Duck Commander duck call business. The series broke records last week when its fourth season debuted with an audience of 11.8 million, making it the most-watched nonfiction series telecast in cable television history.

By the end of September, the women could be wearing her creations for the world to see, said Barrow, who handcrafts jewelry, gifts and other keepsakes for her online business, DreamNColor.

Barrow is hoping her handmade, custom-keepsake jewelry is right up the ladies’ alley. “The best promotion you can have is a celebrity being seen in something you made,” she said, which is why she contacted Texas-based Black Diamond Celebrity Gifting Co.

When celebrities get married, have babies or have other big events, companies are eager to help mark the occasion and get exposure for their wares. Diaper bags, clothing, and in this case, jewelry, are given to promote smaller businesses. Black Diamond charges an inclusion fee of $10 to $30 per event, according to its website.

Barrow will design six unique pieces, and her wares will be delivered to the women. By the end of September, she needs to have each piece designed, made and shipped.

Brandy Runyon, founder of Black Diamond, said items from 15 to 20 other designers also will be given to the “Duck Dynasty” women, but there’s no guarantee the goods will be worn or shown on the show. The firm also attempts to give business owners photos of their product placement.

Barrow said she hopes the women will be spotted wearing her gifts in public and by other media outlets.

“The possibilities are endless,” Barrow said. “(It’s) such an insane cult following. ... I hope I create something they love. The potential reach is mind-blowing.”

She will create pieces for Miss Kay, who is married to family patriarch Phil Robertson; the wives of the three starring brothers; Uncle Si’s wife; and Sadie, the teenage daughter of Willie Robertson.

Barrow has had some good luck with celebrity gifting already. From actors to rodeo stars, her creations have been picked up. “It gives you a ton of exposure,” she said, noting that the firms try to work with small businesses. “I am so psyched about this latest (project), I couldn’t even tell you. I have goose bumps.”
