Once upon a time there was a woman who played an Evil Queen on TV. It upset the kiddies she ran into after hours at the local Target.
“Some children are very afraid of me,” says the sweet, good-natured Lana Parrilla, who plays Regina/the Evil Queen on the hit ABC series “Once Upon a Time.”
She does like to have some fun with her evilness.
“When I’m walking down the street, I do like to toy with the kids who hide behind their parents. I’ll get into my Evil Queen voice and then give them the Queen laugh. Then I’ll shake their hands and say, ‘I don’t really rip any hearts out, but hi, I’m the Queen.’ I’ll let a moment pass before I say, ‘Really I’m just Lana. Don’t be afraid.”
It’s all those simps in Storybrook who should be afraid, very afraid when “Once Upon a Time” returns for season 2 this weekend (7 p.m, WLS-Channnel 7). We sat down with the meanest of them all for a few plot secrets.
Question: Is it true that fans fly in from all over the world to infiltrate your Vancouver set?
Lana Parrilla: It is true. We have fans that fly in from remote areas all over the world because they just want to meet us. That’s great tribute and it really makes me understand the impact of the show.
Q. Now, let’s get right to it. Is Regina going to be stoned to death for putting that curse on the fairy tale peeps?
A: Well, let’s just say that this season starts off with all the townspeople pretty ticked at Regina. They’re after her. It’s endless. They were actually after her in fairy tale land and now she’s dealing with it again. There is a good reason for this. This season is really about her dealing with the townspeople and her power struggle with Mr. Gold. We also really focus on her relationship with her son Henry. It’s redemption time.
Q. Does her adoptive son Henry hate her now? Is Snow White going to kick her …
A: Henry hasn’t written her off. He is struggling because it’s about what his mom has done to everyone, but what she has done to him. He feels betrayal from her. She led the entire town to think that he was crazy and that he needed therapy. Any parent who lets everyone think their child is crazy knows this is one of the worst thing you could do to a child. … As for Snow, we’ll she’s not happy either. She has her issues with Regina because so much has been taken away from her. She wants revenge.
Q. Doesn’t the Evil Queen need a love interest? Maybe Robin Hood?
A: Everyone needs love in their lives. For Regina, it will be some time before that happens. Right now, her main focus is Henry. I’m not sure that Robin Hood is even her type. Captain Hook might be more up her alley. He has joined our team this year.
Q. Are you really recognized everywhere?
A: I am recognized everywhere now. People mostly stop me and say they want to take a picture or tell me how much they love the show. I’m really open to it. The good thing is I can be very incognito if I need to hide. My style is very different from the Evil Queen. It’s also strange to realize that people know you. Sometimes, I go, Oh wait, I have to put a little bit of makeup on before I leave the house.’ Quite often, I will hear, “In jeans, you look so different.”
