George Wendt feeling ‘pretty good,’ takes role on Broadway

It’s been only six weeks since George Wendt checked into a Chicago area hospital for coronary bypass surgery, but soon he’s bound for Broadway.

Come March 4, the actor best known for his role as barfly Norm Peterson on NBC’s “Cheers” is scheduled to appear as a bartender in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” at New York’s Cort Theatre.

When heart troubles arose, Wendt dropped out of a revival of Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” that closes Sunday at Skokie’s Northlight Theatre. But he says he’s up to the Broadway challenge.

“It’s little by little,” he says of his gradually improving health. “But I feel pretty good.”
