Highland Park’s Music Theatre plans ‘Pajama Game,’ cabarets

Updated: October 2, 2012 8:12AM

The Music Theatre Company (TMTC), artistic director Jessica Redish’s relatively new but thriving Equity operation based in Highland Park, has made some intriguing plans for its 2012-2013 season.

Rather than stacking the deck with many full-blown productions of musicals that can be extremely expensive to mount, it has selected one show — “The Pajama Game” (April 18-May 26, 2013), the classic tale of a factory strike and a romance, with a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and book by George Abbott and Richard Bissell — to receive full-out staging.

The company has then selected three lesser-known musicals and song cycles to receive extended runs in the form of “concert readings.” They include: “Fugitive Songs” (Nov. 2-11), the Chris Miller-Nathan Tysen piece about people on the run, with a mix of traditional folk music, contemporary pop and gospel; “Lucky Stiff” (Nov. 30-Dec. 9), the show by the “Ragtime” team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty about one man’s madcap journey to find an inherited fortune in Monte Carlo; and “The Baker’s Wife” (Feb. 1-10, 2013), the Joseph Stein-Stephen Schwartz musical based on the French film by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono.

In addition, TMTC has scheduled a cabaret series featuring local talents: Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael (Oct. 13); Heidi Kettenring (Feb. 11, 2013); and Jess Godwin with Janelle Kroll (Feb. 23, 2013).

TMTC is located at 1850 Green Bay Rd. in Highland Park (the space occupied by the defunct Apple Tree Theatre). Phone: (847) 579-4900 or visit www.themusictheatrecompany.org.
