This season of “American Idol” will be the last — for VoteForTheWorst.com.
Started in 2004, the website is aimed at rallying people to vote for contestants thought to be the ones the show’s producers and public don’t want to win.
The site will shut down in June after “Idol” wraps its 12th season, according to a post written Sunday by the site’s creator, west suburban resident Dave Della Terza.
“It’s been a fun ride for the last 9 seasons of American Idol,” Della Terza wrote. “Why did I make this decision? Well, ‘American Idol’ is really no longer relevant, so VFTW has accomplished our one true goal: making sure that America stops taking ‘American Idol’ and other singing reality shows seriously.”
Della Terza added that the website “helped kill ‘American Idol.’ ” (Actually, “Idol” still pulls down ratings other shows would kill for.) He credits the site with propping up less-talented “Idol” hopefuls, like Sanjaya Malakar and Scott Savol, well past their due date — a tradition he wants to continue this season.
“Let’s enjoy it for all it’s worth and make sure to get the contestants America hates one step closer to winning a meaningless prize,” he wrote. “And then when our fun contestants go home, let’s make sure we crown White Guy With Guitar #6.”
