Viggo Mortensen on 'The Road'

Viggo Mortensen takes being a cool actor to extremes. For his new
end-of-the-world drama “The Road,” he had to jump into a very cold
ocean on location in Oregon. One wonders: Why can’t the world end in,
say, Miami?
“That water was cold,” says Mortensen. “They had ambulances standing
just in case. Of course, I asked for a second take and everyone was
shocked because it was also 41 degrees outside in a howling wind.”

Nicolas Cage turns in fearless performance in 'Bad Lieutenant'

Nicolas Cage figures he owes no apologies when critics gripe about all the Hollywood action flicks he's done. An Academy Award winner for "Leaving Las Vegas," Cage says commercial movies provide the freedom to do smaller, smarter films such as his offbeat cop tale "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, New Orleans."

Oprah to Ebert: Like breaking up the most beautiful relationship

Oprah Winfrey told the Sun-Times’ Roger Ebert it wasn’t the decision that made her emotional — it was thought of the break up. “When I made the decision, no tears,” Winfrey told Ebert. “Thinking about talking to the viewers is what brought the tears, like breaking up what has been the most beautiful relationship.”

Why put it off? In less than two years, she will vanish from sight as a

pangs of withdrawal? Let’s go ahead and start our seven stages of grief.

Oprah tries again with local man's makeover

It’s not often that America’s reigning daytime talk show queen issues a
mea culpa, but that’s just what Oprah Winfrey does on her show Thursday. Bolingbrook resident Russell Davenport (no relation to this reporter)
first appeared on the “Oprah” show 19 years ago as part of that show’s
popular annual “Oprah! Make Over My Man!” segment.

Johnny Depp named People's Sexiest Man Alive — again

Get lost, Hugh Jackman. This year’s “Sexiest Man Alive” is once again Johnny Depp. Depp nudged aside Jackman to get the coveted endorsement from People
magazine on Wednesday. It’s the 46-year-old actor’s second time as
“Sexiest Man Alive.” He also won in 2003.

'Twilight' time in L.A., and fan gets first bite

Laura Beringer may very well be the envy of every fan of the "Twilight" films and books. Beringer, 29, was one of more than 220,000 "Twihards" who entered a Volvo online sweepstakes, and she won the grand prize, including a round trip for two to Los Angeles with tickets to Hollywood premiere of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."
Davlantes makes her move
Lewis Lazare: The public can talk all they want about Anna Davlantes, but will they flock to watch her in her new role as a contributing anchor and reporter on WFLD-Channel 32's 9 p.m. news? WFLD General Manager Michael Renda made the announcement of her hiring Tuesday, referring to her as one of the "most talked-about personalities" in the Chicago broadcasting business. Davlantes, who left WMAQ-Channel 5 July 30, begins her new job Monday.

Bullock has more fun

It's not always easy being Jesse's girl. Just ask Sandra Bullock, who did something that didn't go over well at home. "I like the blond hair," she says of her light locks in the new film "The Blind Side." "But there was a very important person in my life who didn't want me to be blond. There wasn't an appreciation."

Even after Rihanna beating, women love Chris Brown
Bill Zwecker: Seems Chris Brown’s conviction for beating up ex-girlfriend Rihanna hasn’t had much effect on his love life. According to one Brown business associate — who claims to spend a lot
of time at the R&B superstar’s house — Brown is constantly
approached by women, often quite aggressively, ‘‘with most of them, without fail, figuring out some way to slip Chris their numbers,’’ said the source.

Joe Perry on the road, on his own — for now

Being in a band for nearly 40 years is not something you plan, says Joe Perry. “It’s like, what are you going to watch on TV in three weeks?” asks the
Aerosmith guitarist. “You don’t think about things like that. So the
way that everything turned out, it just ... evolved.” And may still be evolving.

Shooting stars and a shoe star

Fashionistas were out in force Thursday night in search of the elusive -- the comfortable stiletto. New York-based designer Kenneth Cole welcomed 250 guests to his Chicago (540 N. Michigan) outpost to celebrate the launch of his new collection, 925 Technology Silver, and promised them just that.

Business and pleasure do mix, La Rabida shows
This year's Friends of La Rabida's gala was a departure from the past; instead of tuxes and gowns, the dress was all business, and the fund-raising fete was held on a weeknight instead of the traditional Friday night.
Getting satire right: Site is a daily show of humor

From Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck to Bill Maher's targets in the 2008 comedic documentary "Religulous," those on the right of the spectrum often wind up as subjects of late-night zingers and scorching sendups. They are less often the originators of those sendups -- standouts such as Dennis Miller and his less comedically accomplished conservative compatriot Rush Limbaugh notwithstanding -- especially when it comes to taking conservative comrades to task.

Don't get Fergie started
Bill Zwecker: Things reportedly got a little testy backstage at ''Saturday Night Live'' this weekend when Fergie spied a couple of copies of People magazine -- featuring the cover story about her hubby Josh Duhamel's alleged fling with that stripper.
