Mary-Kate in grief's grip

Olsen was close to Heath Ledger before his death, and now feels pain and depression mixed with guilt

May 8, 2008

Publicity for the upcoming release of the Chicago-made ''The Dark Knight'' -- the next ''Batman'' flick highly touted as Heath Ledger's last major film role -- is only adding to the pain and depression Mary-Kate Olsen is experiencing.

According to a couple of sources close to the actress, Ledger's death weighs heavily on her mind -- and the "Dark Knight'' buzz only reminds her of the tragic loss of her friend early this year, due to a drug overdose.

''It's tough because Mary-Kate had strong feelings for Heath,'' said a longtime friend of the famous twin. ''Plus, there was so much confusion with all those calls back and forth between Mary-Kate and that masseuse [who, along with Ledger's housekeeper, discovered the unconscious actor]. Everyone involved feels guilty -- because so much time was wasted before the paramedics were called.''

Though the Ledger-Olsen friendship allegedly was totally platonic, another associate of the actress claims, ''Mary-Kate wanted it to be much more.''

They had to wait to let People magazine have the exclusive on their wedding photos. If the happy couple's marriage goes south, I hear Carey's lawyers quickly penned a super-tight prenuptial agreement, guaranteeing Cannon gets zip if it lasts less than 10 years.

According to Brown, ''If I ever had a girlfriend, it'd always be a problem. I try to stay away from even having a girl. I go on dates, talk to a couple of chicks on the phone.''

POLICE BLOTTER: ''CSI'' star Gary Dourdan may claim the ''luggage'' in his car in Palm Springs, Calif., ''belonged to someone else,'' but the authorities still charged him Wednesday with three felonies for possession of controlled substances: heroin, cocaine and ecstasy.

•   Amy Winehouse is in trouble again. The Grammy-winning Brit singer was arrested Wednesday in London in connection with a January video allegedly showing her doing drugs at a party at her North London home.

Also Friday, ''Curb Your Enthusiasm'' star Jeff Garlin will be the first-ever ''Chicago Stories'' playwright to act in his own short play at the annual Victory Gardens Theater fund-raiser at the Four Seasons Hotel, where author Stuart Dybek and civic leader Allen Turner's plays will also be presented.
