Fans fuss over Lifetime’s plans for Aaliyah biopic

Updated: July 19, 2014 6:27AM

Lifetime’s announcement on Monday that Disney star Zendaya would play Aaliyah in a biopic created insta-social media chatter.

Aaliyah is the 22-year-old R&B singer who died in a 2001 plane crash just as her star was eclipsing everyone around her.

The project will film this summer in Toronto, and network reps say that no shooting will take place in Chicago, where R. Kelly reportedly wed the then 15-year-old singer in a private ceremony. (At the time, she had a falsified birth certificate stating that she was 18 years old, but she then went on record as saying the two were never married.)

Aaliyah’s parents later nullified the union.

Some fans started a petition to halt the movie, on the assumption that Aaliyah’s family doesn’t support it, and the Twitter handle
@noaaliyahmovie was launched Tuesday.

A hit amongst the tween set, Zendaya starred on Disney’s “Shake It Up.”
