Valerie Bertinelli to appear on cover of People magazine in bikini

March 25, 2009

Valerie Bertinelli is back.

A People magazine cover featuring a slimmed-down version of the 48-year-old former "One Day at a Time" actress was revealed this morning on "The Today Show."

People magazine senior editor Galina Espinoza told "Today" that it was Bertinelli's goal to get back into a bikini before her 49th birthday.

In the issue, which hits newsstands Thursday, Bertinelli offers tips on how to lose weight while staying healthy. The magazine will also print Bertinelli's workout regimen.

Bertinelli, who has an 18-year-old child with legendary rocker Eddie Van Halen, is a spokesperson for Jenny Craig weight-loss program. She reportedly lost more than 40 pounds on the plan.

Bertinelli announced her deal with Jenny Craig in April 2007. At that time, she told People, "I'm fat," and vowed to drop from a size 14 to a size 8.

She said that going public with her campaign was her way to stay motivated. "I need to do this in front of millions of people so I can't mess up," she said.

Bertinelli is scheduled appear on "Oprah" April 1.
