It was meant as a tribute, but a Paris runway show of models dressed like Amy Winehouse instead was a “total shock” to her grieving father.
Jean Paul Gaultier, the edgy designer known for his work with Madonna, presented a couture collection Wednesday worn by models sporting the singer’s signature beehive hairdo and thick eyeliner. As accompaniment, barbershop singers performed Winehouse’s songs.
“She was an icon of fashion and, truly, the sense of how she mixed the clothes — it was great,” Gaultier said.
But Mitch Winehouse, whose daughter died in July at age 27, said in a statement that the show was “upsetting” for his family.
“We’ve had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy’s death. To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on.”
