The Academy Is ..., a rock band formed eight years ago in Chicago’s suburbs, has broken up.

The band announced the split Saturday on its website, declaring that its members “have decided to go our separate ways.”

The last of the band’s three albums, “Fast Times at Barrington High,” had a top 20 debut on the Billboard chart in 2008. The disc produced the single “About a Girl” and ranked No. 46 on Rolling Stone’s list of the year’s best album.

Three members of the quartet remained after guitarist Michael Guy Chislett and drummer Andy Mrotek left The Academy Is ... earlier this year.

On his blog, frontman William Beckett explained, “For years there has been a growing distance felt within the band as we’ve progressed, both geographically and artistically, and instead of trying to patch the holes we’re left with, my heart tells me it’s time to move on with the next chapter in our lives.”

The band’s statement promised, “you can look forward to hearing new music from each of us.”
