Orbert Davis will serve as artist in residence at this summer’s Chicago Jazz Festival, organizers announced Thursday.
The composer-trumpeter will lead his Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble in a new composition on Sept. 3 at the Petrillo Music Shell and “thread his talents” throughout the free fest, the announcement said.
It’s Davis’ first festival performance since conducting the Philharmonic’s debut there in 2004.
Singer Cassandra Wilson will headline a Petrillo show on Sept. 3, with trumpeter Roy Hargrove doing the honors Sept. 4.
A saxophone summit with Joe Lavano, David Liebman and Ravi Coltrane is set for Sept. 2 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.
More festival acts will be announced next month.
