David Hidalgo. | THE SILVERMAN GROUP
The overflowing talent and encyclopedic musical knowledge possessed by Los Lobos’ five principal members have won the band’s status as a uniquely American musical treasure. As the group’s central figure, David Hidalgo has attained mastery of an array of styles including psychedelic rock, soul, blues, Mexican folk, cumbia and more.
Hidalgo’s side projects include Latin Playboys with Los Lobos bandmate Louie Perez, and Los Super Seven. Hidalgo remains in perpetual demand as a session player for top-flight artists including Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Ozomatli and Buckwheat Zydeco.
The multi-instrumentalist’s palette extends beyond guitar to include accordion, violin and drums, in addition to his expressive vocals and traditional Mexican folk instruments like the requinto jarocho.
Hidalgo will be joined on Aug. 9 at City Winery by his sons David Jr. (drummer for Social Distortion) and Vincent (of Mariachi el Bronx). It’s part of a restless stretch. On Thursday, Hidalgo performed one of several dates on Peter Frampton’s Guitar Circus tour in Cincinnati. OnAug. 10, he performs with Los Lobos in Portland at the Oregon Zoo.
The show marks the one-year anniversary for City Winery Chicago. The venue has gained high marks from music fans for its intimate setting and top-notch acoustics.
NOTE: Had the good fortune to run into Los Lobos saxophonist Steve Berlin at the Potluck Audio Conference in Tuscon, Ariz. His Spotify play list of favorite tracks by Hidalgo follows.
