Chicago DJ duo the Hood Internet’s rep as party meisters earned national acclaim for their manic mash-ups of hip-hop and indie rock. Which made the ruminative and introspective tone of “Feat,” this month’s first album of purely original material, all the more surprising. No doubt the joint will be back to jumping in this album-release concert (postponed from a previous September date), which also features “Feat” collaborators and great local band in their own right, My Gold Mask, and the allegedly final show of hip-hop collective BBU. BEN GIBBARD
Death Cab for Cutie played the Chicago Theatre in April and Taste of Chicago in July. Now singer Ben Gibbard has released “Former Lives,” his first solo record after 15 years with Death Cab, and returns to the third coast for his own show. “Former Lives” is not a divorce album (Gibbard recently split from actress Zooey Decshanel), but it’s haunting nonetheless. THE TRAGICALLY HIP
This veteran rock band just released its 12th album, “Now for Plan A.” Their last 10 debuted in their native Canada at No. 1 or No. 2. This one debuted at No. 3. Have no fear; singer Gordon Downie still boasts a growling intensity that makes the record bristle and buck, and the quintet’s shows are legendary in their solidity. NETHERFRIENDS
And now for something completely different. After a series of releases born out of his ambitious song-from-every-state touring and writing project, Shawn Rosenblatt stays put this month for a more stationary gimmick. With the Monday night residency throughout November at Schubas, Rosenblatt — performing under his moniker Netherfriends — will prepare four new songs each Monday to track and record live on stage, with audience participation.
