HIS LIFE AT A GLANCE
1936 | Glen Campbell, one of 12 kids, is born on April 22 in Arkansas.
1964-66 | Plays bass guitar on the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” album and tours with the group singing harmonies, filling in for an ailing Brian Wilson.
1966 | Releases “Gentle on My Mind.”
1967 | Releases the album “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and makes history by winning four Grammys in both country and pop categories. For the album “Gentle on My Mind,” he receives two country awards, and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” does the same in pop.
1968 | Releases “Wichita Lineman”; he’s also named CMA Entertainer of the Year
1969 | Stars in “True Grit” opposite John Wayne and records a theme song that earns Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
1969 | Hosts his weekly variety show, “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” which runs through 1972.
1975 | The No. 1 hit “Rhinestone Cowboy” becomes Campbell’s biggest-selling single with 2 million copies.
1980 | Begins a stormy relationship with country star Tanya Tucker, then 21. In his autobiography, Campbell called Tucker “a crazy woman.”
1982 | Marries his fourth (and current) wife, Kim Woolen, a former Radio City Music Hall Rockette. They have three children together: Cal, Shannon and Ashley, who become part of their dad’s band.
1995 | Publishes Rhinestone Cowboy: An Autobiography.
2003 | Arrested on drunk driving and hit-and-run charges in Phoenix. He later pleads guilty and receives a 10-day jail sentence.
2005 | Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
2008 | Returns to his signature label, Capitol Records, and releases “Meet Glen Campbell,” covering songs from the likes of U2.
2011 | Announces he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and announces his farewell tour.
