Chicago filmmaker Steve James, director of “The Interrupters,” was one of five nominees announced Thursday in the best documentary category of the Directors Guild of America awards.
“The Interrupters” chronicles the work of ex-convicts in CeaseFire to prevent gun violence in Chicago. James is up against Martin Scorsese (“George Harrison: Living in the Material World”), Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (“Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory”), James Marsh (“Project Nim”) and Richard Press (“Bill Cunningham New York”).
Winners of DGA awards will be announced Jan. 28.
Though DGA nominations often foreshadow Oscar contenders, the Motion Picture Academy already has announced that “The Interrupters” is not among the 15 films eligible for nomination in the documentary category.
