Better than a baby-sitter: the multiplex. Here are some family-friendly options:
“Dolphin Tale” (Sept. 23): The film is based on a real dolphin named Winter, who faced certain death when she lost her tail in 2005. In reel and in real life, a marine biologist (in the film played by Harry Connick Jr.) and a prosthetics genius (Morgan Freeman) give Winter a new lease on life. By the way, Winter plays herself.
“Puss in Boots” (Nov. 4): Antonio Banderas channels his favorite feline from 2004’s “Shrek 2.” Here we meet a young Puss who robs a bank with his tricky pal Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and must go on the run to clear his name. Cut to an older Puss, who is forced by Humpty to steal golden eggs. They’re joined by Kitty Softpaws (voiced by Salma Hayek).
“Happy Feet 2” (Nov. 18): Harried as you plan your Thanksgiving bird? Park the kids in front of this new adventure where Mumble (Elijah Wood) the tap-dancing penguin tries to find his way again to the beat while dealing with his non-dancing son Erik and trying to unite all the penguins.
“Arthur Christmas” (Nov. 23): A boy (voice of James McAvoy) believes in Santa but wants to get to the bottom of how he delivers presents to the world in one night in this animated 3-D outing.
