See how they learn in ‘If You Build It’

Teenagers in a poor North Carolina county get an unconventional education in “If You Build It,” a documentary opening Friday at the Music Box Theatre. Director Patrick Creadon (“Wordplay,” “I.O.U.S.A.”), a Chicago native, follows a pair of activist educators as they lead students through a yearlong design and building project. Creadon and his wife and co-producer Christine O’Malley will do Q&A’s after screeniongs at 7:10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Simon Pegg gets scared

In “A Fantastic Fear of Everything,” Simon Pegg (“The World’s End”) stars as an author whose serial killer research has turned him into a paranoid wreck. It’s available on demand and opens Friday at the Logan Theatre.

Sinbad back in battle

An intrepid “Arabian Nights” hero sails again in “Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage,” opening Friday at AMC Streets of Woodfield 20 and AMC South Barrington 30. Patrick Stewart narrates the new adventure of Sinbad, played by Shahin Sean Solimon, who also directs.

Hank Paulson’s two cents

Documentary maker Joe Berlinger (“Paradise Lost”) turns his camera toward former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson in “Hank: Five Years to the Brink.” The movie recounts Paulson’s efforts to rescue the economy during the financial crisis of 2008. Already available on Netflix, “Hank” also shows at AMC 600 N. Michigan starting Friday.

Mercenary an ‘Outsider’

You won’t find Ponyboy or Sodapop in “The Outsider,” an action movie opening Friday at AMC Streets of Woodfield 20. This one’s about a British mercenary in Los Angeles (Craig Fairbrass) trying to find his daughter with the help of a detective (Jason Patric). James Caan and Shannon Elizabeth co-star.

Follow that wheelbarrow

Wheelbarrows are the chase-scene conveyance of “7 Boxes,” available on demand and opening Friday at the Gene Siskel Film Center. A teenage delivery boy in Paraguay is offered $100 to haul seven mysterious boxes across a market, but pursuers complicate the mission.
