Kristen Wiig adjusts to life with Saturdays free

A year after her exit from “Saturday Night Live,” what does Kristen Wiig do with her weekend evenings?

Answer: Anything she wants.

“I couldn’t watch the show when I first left,” Wiig says. “I didn’t watch it and now I can. I can also go out to dinner on Saturday night.”

That is when she’s not making movies like “Girl Most Likely,” opening Friday. Wiig plays a woman whose fiancé leaves her, so she stages an almost suicide and ends up in the custody of her sexy, hands-on mama.

“It’s fun to play people who are a mess,” Wiig says. “Hopefully, as the movie goes on, she does find herself.”

One of the perks of the film was having Annette Bening play her mother. “It was so surreal. I’ve been a fan my whole life. When she said yes, I freaked out. It was like going to an acting class.”

Next up for Wiig is acting opposite Ben Stiller in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” due out later this year, and “Anchorman 2,” as “Steve Carell’s love interest, which was a really good job.”

She’s still saying “I don’t” to a “Bridesmaids” sequel. “It’s not going to happen,” she says. “It’s not like I don’t want to do it because I don’t want to mess with the first one. There are other reasons.” At that point, Wiig clams up.

She says it was hard to leave “SNL” after appearing from 2005 to 2012. “Sometimes I see something on the news and think of a sketch. I spent so many years constantly looking for characters. If it’s current you can put it on the show that night.”
