Cruise connects at kiddie party

The director of “Rock of Ages” (opening Friday) took a childish approach in making a rock star of Tom Cruise.
When Adam Shankman met the superstar, both were sitting in baby chairs at the birthday party of Adam Sandler’s daughter. “I couldn’t have looked like a bigger idiot,” he recalls, “but Tom still said, ‘Dude, when are we going to make a musical together?’ ”
Cruise, it turns out, was a fan of Shankman’s “Hairspray.”
