Clark/Lake

February 11, 2005

Most Chicagoans know the Clark and Lake CTA station because they've passed through its turnstiles on their way to get a driver's license, pay for a city sticker, open a bank account or close on a home. That's because this multiline, multilevel stop -- a hub for city government and personal finance -- opens into the expansive James R. Thompson Center and sits across from City Hall, major banks, title companies, law firms and the like.

But many people don't know that it's also a center point for small specialty businesses and restaurants. These range from lobby shops that sell authentic artwork and exquisite orchids to delightful spots to sit down, grab a beer and perhaps ponder which came first, big buildings or big business.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Cultural Bookstore
James R. Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph, second floor
(312) 263-4514

This small shop, tucked away on the second floor of the Thompson Center, carries a wide assortment of books written by African-American writers or covering topics of interest to the black community. There's also an impressive children's section.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

POWER FLOWERS

Robert Daniels Florist
40 W. Lake
(312) 332-0500

Local legal eagles, ad execs and others looking to make the right floral impression rely on Robert Daniels to outfit their offices and send stylish thank-you's. Owner Daniel Krupinski hits the flower markets every morning at 6 a.m. to choose the freshest blooms for the shop, which also carries delightful gifts (jewelry, frames, boxed cards, candles and bath delights). "I also go there to get inspired," says Krupinski.

Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday.

PAUSE FOR PAMPERING

Fashion Nails By Design
10 W. Lake
(312) 263-3006

The full-service manicure-pedicure spot for men and women also offers waxing, eyebrow tinting and facials. Prices are low and this upscale spot boasts what others can't: an attention to detail at breakneck speed.

Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

NATURAL RESOURCES

Illinois Artisans Shop
James R. Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph, second floor
(312) 814-5321

Looking for the perfect gift? The Illinois Artisans Shop is chock-full of the best of this state's top creative types. Whether it's a piece of hand-crafted jewelry, a black-and-white photo of Wrigley Field, an abstract painting of an L stop or just a simple birthday card, the shop is a great place to get a last-minute gift or the piece de resistance for the office, says assistant manager Lillian Roberts.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A QUICK CALMING FIX

The Ultimate Backrub
27 W. Lake
(312) 263-4782

The Ultimate Back Rub specializes in quick fixes for those crazy days. Indulge in anywhere from 10 minutes to a full hour of blissful back rubbing (or opt for a foot or scalp massage) for much less time and money than you'd spend at a fancy spa. Prices start at $15 for the "10 Minute Tune Up.".

Hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR NAME

Monday's Restaurant & Bar
203 N. LaSalle
(312) 629-0444

What is it about neon beer signs, potted plants and cushy booths that make you feel right at home? That's the atmosphere at Monday's. Drink specials bring the after-work crowd to the brass-accented bar, but business is also brisk at lunch, in part because of its great burgers. "The bacon cheeseburger is actually one of the better burgers in the city," says Ken McDonald, director of a nearby real estate consulting firm.

Hours: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.
