Old Lake County Sheriff's Home
and Jail232 S. Main Crown Point's most embarrassing claim to fame is the old Sheriff's house and jail, one block south of the old courthouse. John Dillinger (right) escaped from the jail in 1939 while he was awaiting trial for the alleged murder of an East Chicago policeman. It's nice to look at, but it's only open during certain periods while it's undergoing renovations. It is expected to have a couple rooms open from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 19, when the downtown launches its holiday season.
