Distributor blamed for Potter leak

July 19, 2007

Copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have been arriving early by mail, the book's U.S. publisher said, accusing a Chicago distributor of sending them out too soon.

In papers filed Wednesday at Chicago's Circuit Court of Cook County, Scholastic Inc. accused Levy Home Entertainment and one of its customers, Itasca-based online retailer DeepDiscount.com, of a ''complete and flagrant violation of the agreements that they knew were part" of the book's release plan.

The sent copies amounted to one-hundredth of 1 percent of the total to go on sale Saturday in the United States, Scholastic said. With an announced first printing of 12 million, that would mean about 1,200 copies.

Donna Coyne, Levy's director of product management, declined comment.
