When the cast of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” appeared at the Mall of America, Lily Collins got to see the depths of fans’ passion for her co-star.

“There were floors of screaming people,” she recalls. “One girl fainted when she saw Jamie.”

That’s Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Volturi leader Caius in the “Twilight” films. In the new movie (based on the popular young-adult book series and opening Wednesday), he’s Jace Wayland, one of the half-human, half-angel Shadowhunters.

Q: A fan passed out? Do you usually have this affect on women?

A: (Laughing): I do not usually have this affect on women.

Q: Why did you want to play Jace?

A: He’s a damaged character, and I’m drawn to that type. I also feel that I had the opportunity to change the image of the male love interest. For a long time, we’ve had this super masculine guy out there. I hope to give the YA audience a rock-star, damaged guy. It’s time to switch it up a bit.

Q: It’s such a physical movie. Did you get hurt?

A: Not really. I did four months of training with a lot of kickboxing. It was fun because I went to L.A. a month early to learn the stunts. I didn’t want to use a stunt double. If someone falls, I want to fall.

Q: Have you ever passed out for your favorite star?

A: Not yet. But at least I’ve been trained on how to fall and not hurt yourself.
