Simon Cowell a daddy? That concept had longtime Hollywood associates and friends of the music world kingpin shaking their heads Wednesday — reacting to Us Weekly’s report that “The X Factor” honcho had fathered a child with the estranged wife of one of his best friends.

Cowell, 53, and socialite Lauren Silverman, the 36-year-old wife of New York real estate mogul Andrew Silverman, are reportedly expecting a child together. Silverman is said to be approximately 10 weeks along.

“I cannot see someone as self-absorbed as Simon Cowell being a good father,” said a veteran producer who worked with the famously prickly Brit on “American Idol” for the years when Cowell was the TV show’s judge we all loved to hate.

Another chum who has worked with him more recently on “The X Factor” in Los Angeles said, “You just never think of putting ‘Simon Cowell’ and ‘children’ or ‘little kids’ in the same sentence.”

For years Cowell insisted children were not part of his life plan. Back in 2009 he said, “God, no, I couldn’t have children. If I had them here drawing on the walls, I’d go nuts. … With kids, you’ve got a routine you can’t escape from.”

However, more recently Cowell has seemed to be a bit more open to the idea of fatherhood, telling AOL in March 2012, “I do really, really like kids, because I can talk to them and listen to them. The problem has always been how much time you need to devote to bringing up kids. I’ve always dedicated all my life to work. … I’ve probably missed the opportunity.”

Now, it looks like if an opportunity has arisen for Cowell to evolve into a good parent.

“I would never say never,” said another Hollywood Cowell pal. “But I must say I’m pretty skeptical about the whole thing.”
