Countless press releases were generated during the past many months to herald the Chicago production of “The Book of Mormon,” which began previews at the Bank of American Theatre here on Dec. 11. But there was absolutely no official word issued about the fact that as of Dec. 11, when the show began previews at the Bank of America Theatre, a major cast change had been put into place.
Syesha Mercado, second runner-up on season seven of “American Idol,” replaced the previously announced Stephanie Umoh (who had starred in a recent Broadway revival of “Ragtime”), in the featured role of Nabulungi, the Ugandan girl who agrees to be baptized, and dreams of going to Salt Lake City.
Press representatives for the show will say only that “there is no comment” on the change.
Mercado, who recently appeared as Ti Moune in the revival of “Once on This Island” at the Papermill Playhouse, performed in the 2008 “American Idols Live! Tour,” and later played Deena Jones in the national/international tour of “Dreamgirls.”
