Considering all the weird headlines and bizarre interviews with computer security whiz John McAfee, you knew that someone would soon figure out a way to make a movie or TV show about this increasingly odd-acting character. † McAfee, who now says he wants to return to the U.S., has been on the run in Central America — and in and out of jails and hospitals — after he abruptly fled from his home in Belize, following the murder of a neighbor. McAfee has insisted he had nothing to do with the man’s death, but believes the Belize authorities are intent on pinning the crime on him. Of course, considering their seemingly bottomless bank accounts — those 20 Gs probably was only pocket change to them! The winning bidder bought a Record Plant tape sticker that Lennon had signed on December 8, 1980. The inscription reads, “To Karl, who strung me along, thanks, John Lennon 1980.” The Beatle legend also added one of his signature self-portrait caricatures. He then jumped into his limo for the ride to his home at New York’s famed Dakota building, where he was tragically shot and killed by
PIECE OF CAKE: Chicago’s own Lurie Children’s Hospital and Dr. Doug Nordli, director of the medical center’s epilepsy center, will be featured on the Monday episode of “Cake Boss,” starring Buddy Valastro.
Here’s the backstory: Bartolina Faugno, the 17-year-old niece of Valastro, has been treated by Dr. Nordli since she was a baby. As a way to thank him and the hospital — and pay tribute to its recent move to its new home in Streeterville — Bartolina’s mom, Grace Faugno, Valastro’s sister, asked him to bake a cake for Lurie. That event had special meaning for the rock ‘n’ roll stars — considering it was at KROQ where the couple met each other for the very first time, 17 years ago. Despite all the stories that keep flying around — insisting Stefani and Rossdale’s marriage is on the rocks — sources close to the couple confidently tell me it’s total nonsense. “Gwen and Gavin are just fine, happy and very much together,” said a longtime friend of Stefani.
Sundance Film Festival USA will send 10 films — and the filmmakers who made them — to 10 cities, including Chicago. Our Town’s selection will be “Touchy Feely,” accompanied by director and screenwriter Lynn Shelton. The Jan. 31 screening and Q&A at the Music Box Theatre on Southport will be all about this intriguing movie, starring Rosemarie DeWitt, Allison Janney, Ron Livingston, Scoot McNairy, Ellen Page and Josh Pais. It’s about a massage therapist who suddenly is unable to do her job when she’s stricken by an aversion to bodily contact.
Meanwhile, her uptight brother’s failing dental practice gets a huge boost when patients flock to him — when they learn he’s suddenly developed a “healing touch.”
WINDY CITY TALES: Here’s a book that will resonate with so many Chicagoans — especially as we move closer to those (potentially) snowy days of winter. Mike Brown and Sandy DeLisle and their team have photographed parking spot “place savers” in various Chicago neighborhoods, over the last five years. The end result is “Dibs Chicago: The Winter Phenomenon of Parking Spot Saving” — which could be just the perfect holiday gift for a neighbor or friend, perhaps presented with one’s tongue firmly placed in one’s cheek! Among the clever chapter titles are “Most Trashy,” Most Childish,” “Most Busted” and “Most Polite … Or Not.” Brown and DeLisle will be on hand at the State Restaurant, 935 W. Webster, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, for a book-signing that undoubtedly will also include the sharing of some funny parking “dibs” war stories! † As Chicago and the whole country approaches the much-feared fiscal cliff, mixologist and bartender O’Brien’s will continue to serve the $8.50 drink until the crisis is averted.
