Shocking dialogue is a fixture of director Judd Apatow’s comedies, but one gag in his next film will hit one viewer especially hard.
In “This Is 40” (opening Dec. 21), the frustrated middle-aged dad played by Paul Rudd declares he could never live up to the sexual prowess of someone like Prince. His own bedroom skills, he laments in earthy Apatow fashion, are more like David Schwimmer’s.
Apatow insisted it’s no putdown of the Lookingglass Theatre co-founder, who just happened to be the best parallel to himself — “a goofy Jewish guy.”
“It didn’t really mean anything,” the “40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up” director told the Sun-Times on Monday. “Just who’s like me and really different from Prince.”
A spokeswoman for Schwimmer said he hasn’t seen “This Is 40” and likely is unaware of the line.
The actress playing Rudd’s wife, Leslie Mann — who’s married to Apatow in real life — said Prince is no competition for the “Friends” alum. “I would rather have sex with David Schwimmer,” she said (prompting her husband to observe, “Well, you do!”)
As Mann sees it, Schwimmer already is “superconfident. He’s like, ‘I don’t need to prove anything. I’m David Schwimmer. I know what I can do.’ ”
Not that he has any reason to worry, Apatow concluded: “We all know that goofy Jewish guys are the best lay. That’s just a fact.”
