Almost five years since its debut at Steppenwolf, “August: Osage County” has its big-screen leading ladies.
The Weinstein Co. announced Wednesday that Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, long rumored for the project, will work together for the first time in a film adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer and Tony-winning play.
John Wells, best known for his TV work on “The West Wing” and “Shameless,” will direct.
The drama about a fractious family reunited in crisis went on to a successful Broadway run and national and international tours.
Streep will play matriarch Violet Weston, the role for which Steppenwolf’s Deanna Dunagan won a Tony Award, with Roberts as daughter Barbara.
