Lou Malnati’s server Irina Zavalisca says she hasn’t seen a change in her tips, attributing that to regular customer’s and the restaurant’s name. But other servers say their gratuities have fallen. (Scott Stewart/Sun-Times)
Economy may be tipping point for Chicago servers Chicagoans are some of the highest tippers in the nation. Zagat's 2008-2009 Chicago Restaurants survey found Chicagoans are tipping servers an average of 19.1 percent of food bills. Despite the city's rank near the top, several servers weren't overly impressed. While many do see tips averaging between 18 percent and 20 percent, some have noticed an alarming drop in tips recently.

Campaign 2008

Sports Big Z makes grade-A return It was a Fourth of July filled with awe-inspiring sights for the Cubs. Which had nothing at all to do with fireworks. Just the opposite -- if not just the way they would have drawn it up. In his much-anticipated return from the disabled list, Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano showed off the power in his refreshed shoulder, reaching 96 mph with his fastball during six innings of shutout pitching for a 2-1 victory in the opener of a key series against division-rival St. Louis.
It's a camou-flogging Dual citizenship gives Ozzie Guillen a chance to celebrate back-to-back Independence Days -- one Friday for his adopted United States and today for his native Venezuela. ''It's a two-day party for me,'' the White Sox manager said.

Venus beats Serena for Wimbledon title

For kids, the entertainment is pier pleasure with a variety of costumed strolling performers wandering around the pier, often stopping to talk with children, perform and pose for photographs.

Entertainment What will Leno do after O'Brien takes over? Don't pity Jay Leno. ''The Tonight Show'' host is losing his home of 17 years, but Leno finds himself in an enviable position. Still packing the ratings punch that delivers the lion's share of NBC's estimated $300 million in annual late-night revenue, Leno has a line of suitors hoping to land his services. And he won't come cheap: NBC pays him $27 million per year.

Business Gonna leave a mark Andy Ihnatko: It's true, it's true: I don't really bookmark things in my browsers. This admission is similar in scope to having a car but not making any right turns in it, or getting your picture taken with the J. Lo figure at Madam Tussaud's and not checking out her butt. Y'see, it's a fundamental feature. Or at least it was back during the Clinton administration. Today, bookmarking things is sort of old hat.

Billy Corgan has time to design a guitar for Fender...

But still can't be bothered to set a Chicago date for a reunited Pumpkins show. What's up with that? (Don't ask me; I haven't been able to get an answer out of anyone in the band's camp.) In any event, the release from Fender follows the jump.
