The Steel Bridge

December 10, 2007

steel brij / n. / 1. A truss bridge on I-94 that spans the Little Calumet River between Dolton and Calumet City in the south suburbs. 2. A landmark often cited by radio and TV traffic reporters. E.g.: "It's 55 minutes from the Steel Bridge to the Ryan -- better find an alternate." The traffic reference can be a source of confusion, though, because: a.) there are lots of steel bridges in the area, and b.) the stretch of I-94 that includes the bridge used to be called the Calumet Expy. but now is the Bishop Ford Freeway.
