Maxwell Street /max well street/ n. Shorthand for the famous Maxwell Street Market, which is no longer on Maxwell Street. Thanks to an unpopular and protested relocation, it's now on Canal and will soon move to Desplaines Street. In its heyday, the giant, colorful and aromatic flea market was considered the nation's largest open-air market, offering just about anything imaginable -- legal and illegal -- including the Maxwell Street Polish, live blues, car parts, tube socks and more.
